Travertine: Why It Could Be the Best Choice for Your Outdoor Installation Project

By Kyle April 14, 2023

Pavements take up large outdoor spaces that introduce your property to everyone passing by and everyone who comes in. It is for this reason that when it comes to deciding on what to put into your property, you need to be careful and serious about how it will look and how it could create a distinct ambiance for your property. While there are different materials and makeup used to install, in this post, we will discuss more travertine.

What is Travertine?

Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs. Travertine often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and exists in white, tan, cream-colored, and even rusty varieties. It is formed by a process of rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the mouth of a hot spring or in a limestone cave. In the latter, it can form stalactites, stalagmites, and other speleothems. It is frequently used in Italy and elsewhere as a building material.

When it is manufactured as tiles or slabs, travertine is generally filled with cement and polished or honed with open pores or cravats left behind. This approach makes the element vulnerable to breaking, which means that an extra treatment, such as pavement sealing, ought to be considered as a final touch to the installed pathway.

How Travertine Increases Your Home Value?

As mentioned previously, travertine is a terrestrial sedimentary rock formed through the precipitation of carbonate minerals from solution in ground and surface waters and/or geothermal heated hot springs. Similar (but softer and extremely porous) deposits formed from ambient-temperature water are known as tufa.

Because of its look and texture, Travertine often increases the aesthetic and general value of every pavement. Whether it be a pathway or a surrounding floor space in the pool, travertine does redefine the character of the space where it is installed. The natural lustrous element in a travertine pavement makes it quite luxurious in appearance, especially when the sun’s rays catch the minerals that are embedded in the tile.

Travertine Concerns Before and After Installation

Those open pores and cravats that formed naturally in travertine can easily fill with water or contaminants if not properly sealed by a company with a lot of experience in the sealing of travertine; once the coating dries with those pits filled with a sealer, you will be left with a surface that looks like someone filled all of those little pits with Elmer’s glue, often voiding your warranty from your supplier and leaving you with a costly expense to strip that sealer, which is extremely difficult to do on travertine without damaging the delicate substrate.

As travertine is not as common as brick pavers, most of our local competitor paver sealing companies don’t have much experience sealing this complicated surface. Over the years, we have sealed a lot of travertine in both commercial and residential applications. In that time, as you can imagine, we have mastered the technique behind properly applying travertine sealant in all imaginable forms.

 Why Not Do It Yourself?

DIY travertine sealing procedures often end up short of what is expected by homeowners. Although there are a lot of sealants that can be bought online, it is evident that not all of these would be safe for you or your pavement. As much as you have invested in the installation of your travertine pavement, you also need to consider investing in the sealant that you use to protect these natural tiles from the wear and tear that may happen over time.

Besides chemical issues, there is also the consideration of extensive labor and the requirement to have the right skills necessary to make the installation practically accurate and the sealing process safe and capable of prolonging the life, function, and quality of your travertine pavement.

Due to this, we highly discourage homeowners from attempting to seal their travertine surfaces themselves, as even most local experienced paver sealing companies struggle with this process.
